Introducing the 2022 Beijing Olympic Figure Skaters – Men

The 2022 Beijing Olympics Men’s figure skating events take place on the 8th and 10th of February. The short program on the 8th and free skate on the 10th.

Thirty skaters from twenty countries are scheduled to take part in the event. Here we will introduce all of the competitors.

Australia

Brendan Kerry represents Australia and is 27 years old. He competed in both the 2014 and 2018 Olympics, placing 29th and 20th respectively. Kerry trains in Russia under Elena Buianova, Maxim Savosin and Alexander Uspenski. He earned Australia’s Olympic spot at Nebelhorn Trophy placing 7th after being unable to compete at Worlds due to a foot injury. His sister, Chantelle, competes in ice dance, and his mother, Monica MacDonald, was an ice dancer who competed at the 1988 Olympics.

Vladimir Litvintsev represents Azerbaijan and is 20 years old. Whilst originally Russian-born, Litvintsev has always represented Azerbaijan in international competition. He’s suffered many injuries including problems with both knees and mostly recently a stress fracture in his foot, in which he had to use painkillers to get though his recent Europeans appearance, where he placed 8th. Litvintsev qualified a spot for Azerbaijan at Nebelhorn Trophy, and is the flag bearer for the country in the Olympic opening ceremony.

Konstantin Milyukov represents Belarus and is 27 years old. Russian-born Milyukov began skating for Belarus in 2019 and in his first ever Worlds appearance placed 17th, earning the Olympic berth for the country. His coach Oleg Vasilev won the 1984 Olympics as a pairs skater and is head coach of the Belarusian National Team.

Keegan Messing represents Canada and is 30 years old. Messing is the great-great-grandson of Manzo Nagano, the first Japanese person to officially emigrate to Canada. Earlier in his career he represented the USA, he began skating for Canada during the 2014-15 season. Messing lives in Alaska and even created his own backyard rink that he’s used for training. He’s best friends with fellow Canadian skater Nam Nguyen. Messing placed 6th at Worlds, allowing Canada to have the chance for two Olympic quotas. Messing is known for wearing a cowboy hat in the Kiss and Cry, a token he was awarded by a member of his team earlier in his career after a good skate.

Roman Sadovsky

Roman Sadovsky represents Canada and is 22 years old. Sadovsky has a YouTube channel under the name ‘Romsky’ where he talks about his training and competitions as well as posting examples of his filmmaking. He is the 2020 Canadian National champion. Sadovsky earned a second Olympic spot for Canada’s men at Nebelhorn Trophy, and confirmed his spot by placing 2nd at Nationals.

Boyang Jin

Boyang Jin represents China and is 24 years old. Boyang came 4th in the 2018 Olympics and has been a bronze medalist at Worlds twice. He was the first skater to land a quad lutz-triple toe in international competition and first to land 6 quads. His quad lutz is regarded as one of the best techniques for the jump in the world. Sadly, his results have become more inconsistent over the last couple of years, with him only placing 22nd at Worlds last year.

Michal Brezina represents the Czech Republic and is 31 years old. This will be his 4th and final Olympics. Brezina’s best results were a silver medal at Junior Worlds in 2009 and a bronze medal at the European Championships in 2013. He lives in America and is coached by Rafael Arutyunyan. Brezina is married to retired figure skater Danielle Montalbano, and has a daughter called Naya. His younger sister, Eliska Brezinova, is competing at these Olympics in the women’s event.

Aleksandr Selevko represents Estonia and is 20 years old. Selevko is a 3-time Estonian National champion and earned the country a spot for the Olympics by placing 16th at Worlds. His younger brother, Mihhail, is also a competitive figure skater. Selevko has landed a quadruple lutz in international competition. He plays the piano and performed at the 2020 Junior Worlds banquet.

Kevin Aymoz represents France and is 24 years old. When he was younger Aymoz was a national champion at baton twirling. This artistic expression can still be seen today, as Aymoz has some of the most ambitious aerial moves of any skater, with highly regarded step sequences and complex choreography. Aymoz earned the bronze medal at the 2019 Grand Prix Final. This season’s results have been negatively impacted by a difficult recovery from injury.

Adam Siao Him Fa represents France and is 21 years old. Earlier in his career Fa had a successful junior season where he placed 4th at the Junior Grand Prix Final and has been 6th and 7th at Junior Worlds. After Aymoz finished top 10 at Worlds, Fa had the chance to earn a second quota for France at Nebelhorn Trophy, which he did by placing 2nd. Fa’s Olympic spot was confirmed after he placed 2nd at Nationals. His two programs, choreographed by Benoit Richard, have received high praise from fans.

Morisi Kvitelashvili

Morisi Kvitelashvili represents Georgia and is 26 years old. Previously in his career he competed for Russia, but has been skating for Georgia since 2016. He placed 24th at the Olympics in 2018. This season he won Georgia’s first ever senior Grand Prix gold. Kvitelashvili is the most successful male skater to be coached by famed Russian coach Eteri Tutberidze, whose top-end results usually lie with Russian teenage girls. He can be quite inconsistent, placing low in one segment and high in the other.

Alexei Bychenko represents Israel and is 33 (going on 34 during the Olympics) years old. He previously skated for Ukraine until 2009. This will be his 3rd Olympics, previously placing 21st in Sochi and 11th in Pyeongchang. Bychenko is the oldest singles skater competing in these Olympics, and is affectionately dubbed “Uncle Alexei” by skating fans. He planned to retire after 2018 Worlds but was convinced to keep going.

Daniel Grassl represents Italy and is 19 years old. He is already a 7-time National champion (1 novice, 2 junior, 4 senior). Grassl is a Junior World bronze medalist and Europeans silver medalist. Grassl was the first European skater to compete the quad loop in international competition in 2018, and frequently incorporates the quad loop and quad lutz into his programs. He is currently ranked 1st in the World Standings.

Matteo Rizzo

Matteo Rizzo represents Italy and is 23 years old. Rizzo is a 7-time National silver medalist, frequently losing out, sometimes by only a few points, to rival Daniel Grassl. His father Valtter Rizzo is part of his coaching team. Rizzo is a big fan of F1 racing, his favourite team being Ferrari. Rizzo was 21st in the 2018 Olympics, and his best result was bronze at 2019 Europeans.

Yuzuru Hanyu represents Japan and is 27 years old. He is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and the reigning champion. His short program score currently holds the World Record. Hanyu has set himself the goal of being the first skater to complete the quad axel, his best attempt came at Japanese Nationals this season, where he remained standing but the attempt was marked downgraded. He is the only active skater to have completed the Super Slam, which means he’s won all Junior and Senior major competitions.

Yuma Kagiyama

Yuma Kagiyama represents Japan and is 18 years old. He is the 2020 Youth Olympic champion, 2020 Junior Worlds silver medalist, and won the silver medal at Senior Worlds last season. This is his first full season as a senior after last year’s calendar was altered due to the pandemic. He managed to overcome a poor short program at the Italian Grand Prix where he was 7th, staging a stunning comeback to win the competition. He is coached by his father Masakazu, who competed in the ‘92 and ‘94 Olympics.

Shoma Uno represents Japan and is 24 years old. He won the silver medal at the 2018 Olympics, has two World silver medals, and is the 2019 Four Continents champion. He was the first skater to land a quad flip in international competition. In the summer of 2019 he left his long-time coaches and competed the first half of the season without a coach, this led to the worst result of his Senior career at the French Grand Prix. Following these struggles he ended up being coached by 2006 Olympic silver medalist Stéphane Lambiel, and training most of the time in Switzerland.

Deniss Vasiljevs represents Latvia and is 22 years old. He placed 19th at the 2018 Olympics and has competed at Worlds five times. This year he earned the bronze medal at Europeans, becoming the first Latvian skater to do so. He was also the first Latvian skater to podium on the Junior Grand Prix. Vasiljevs is also coached by Stéphane Lambiel. He landed his first ratified quad salchow at Nebelhorn Trophy in 2020. Vasiljevs is an avid baker.

Donovan Carrillo represents Mexico and is 22 years old. He is the co-flag bearer for Mexico in the opening ceremony. Carrillo was finally granted funding in February 2019, after having struggled for years to even afford to travel to competitions. He is the highest placing Mexican skater at any World Championships. He earned his Olympic spot placing 20th at Worlds and is the first Mexican skater to land a quadruple jump and a quad jump in combination. Carrillo is a fan-favourite skater with a huge international fan base.

Mark Kondratiuk represents ROC (Russian Olympic Committee) and is 18 years old. He was relatively unknown heading into 2021 Russian Nationals, only an alternate until his friend and fellow competitor Artur Danielian withdrew due to recovery from surgery, and unexpectedly won bronze, having never even competed at a Junior Grand Prix. He was sent to Nebelhorn Trophy to earn a 3rd quota for the Olympics, where he succeeded by placing 3rd. Kondratiuk bettered his domestic result by winning Nationals this season, and then took the gold at Europeans. He is an artist and his artwork has been shown in exhibitions.

Andrei Mozalev

Andrei Mozalev represents ROC and is 18 years old. He is the reigning Junior World Champion from 2020 and placed second at the Youth Olympics. Mozalev had ankle surgery at the conclusion of last season, the pain having been interfering with training and jumping. Mozalev was sent to Europeans in lieu of Mikhail Kolyada who withdrew due to an ankle injury. His 4th place finish and second consecutive win over teammate Evgeni Semenenko earned him an Olympic spot.

Evgeni Semenenko represents ROC and is 18 years old. He was first alternate for the Olympics, and was assigned the spot after training mate Mikhail Kolyada tested positive for COVID-19 less than two weeks before the competition. Semenenko is the 2021 Russian Junior champion and 2021 Skate Canada bronze medalist. He helped earn three potential spots for ROC at Worlds. Semenenko is studying medicine at university.

Cha is the 2018 Grand Prix Final bronze medalist and 2022 Four Continents Champion, becoming the first Korean man to win the competition. He’s coached by Brian Orser and under normal circumstances trains at the Toronto Cricket Club in Canada, however he has been unable to train there due to the pandemic. He finished 10th at Worlds, allowing for a potential second spot for his country at the Olympics. Cha appeared on the show King of Mask Singer in 2020.

Sihyeong Lee represents South Korea and is 21 years old. He has competed at 4 Junior Worlds and 5 Four Continents championships. Lee had the opportunity to earn a second Olympic spot for South Korea at Nebelhorn Trophy, and succeeded by placing 5th. He is a 3 time National silver medalist.

Nikolaj Majorov represents Sweden and is 21 years old. He is the younger brother of retired skater Alexander Majorov. Nikolaj earned an Olympic spot for Sweden by placing 23rd at his home World Championships. He was scheduled to compete at Europeans this year but had to withdraw due to a positive coronavirus test. He is an avid photographer, even taking the Swedish skating team’s official photos, and has stated he would like to become a police officer after his skating career.

Lukas Britschgi represents Switzerland and is 23 years old. He is coached by 1988 Olympian Michael Huth and trains in Germany. He earned Switzerland a spot at the Olympics by placing 15th at Worlds, the highest championship placement of his career until his 11th place at this year’s Europeans. He is a 4-time Swiss champion (1 junior, 3 senior), and the 2021 NRW Trophy champion.

Ivan Shmuratko represents Ukraine and is 20 years old. Shmuratko is a 4-time Ukrainian National champion, and has won a Junior Grand Prix bronze medal. He earned an Olympic spot for Ukraine by placing 21st at Worlds. Beginning this season, he is splitting his training time between Kiev and the Young Goose Academy in Egna. He has a podcast with fellow Ukrainian skater Andrii Kokura.

USA

Jason Brown represents the USA and is 27 years old. He was 9th at the 2014 Olympics, but sadly missed making the team in 2018. Brown has finished in the top 10 at all 4 of his Worlds appearances. He is a silver and bronze Four Continents medalist. Brown is highly regarded as one of the most artistic skaters in the sport, his intricate choreography and transitions bringing him successful results despite never successfully completing a quad in international competition. Brown has learned Japanese and frequently posts in both English and Japanese to connect with his international fans.

Nathan Chen

Nathan Chen represents the USA and is 22 years old. He placed 5th at the 2018 Olympics. Chen is a 3-time World champion, the 2017 Four Continents Champion, and 3-time Grand Prix Final champion. He was undefeated in the past quad until a 3rd-place finish at Skate America earlier this season. He is the current free skate and combined total score World Record holder, and has landed every type of quad jump in competition aside from the quad axel. Chen enrolled in Yale university in 2018, but is currently deferring his studies to focus on training.

Vincent Zhou

Vincent Zhou represents the USA and is 21 years old. He placed 6th at the Olympics in 2018 and is the 2019 World bronze medalist. Zhou failed to make the free skate at Worlds last year, leading the USA to need to send a skater to Nebelhorn Trophy to earn a third spot. After a successful summer, Zhou was chosen to go and won the competition. This season he won Skate America ahead of his domestic rival Nathan Chen. His parents are both originally from China, and Zhou brought back his Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon free skate from the 18-19 season with the goal to perform it at the Beijing Olympics.

On February 7th, Vincent announced that he had to withdraw from the individual event due to testing positive for COVID-19.

Bonus: Team event

The men’s team event takes place on February 4th and 6th. One man will take part in the team event and not the individual event.

Germany

Paul Fentz

Paul Fentz represents Germany and is 29 years old. He placed 26th at Worlds, sadly failing to earn an Olympic spot. Fentz, dealing with injury, attempted to earn an Olympic spot at Nebelhorn Trophy but only placed 13th. As Olympic spots were earned in Women’s singles, Pairs, and Ice Dance, Germany is allowed an additional athlete quota to compete only in the team event. As the highest scoring German man eligible for the spot, Fentz was chosen. Due to poor results, all of his funding was stopped, and yet he still became the National champion this season and has been the most successful German man in this quad.
