Considered a child prodigy in his youth, Gogolev was said to be landing all kinds of quads (bar quad axel) when he was just 13. He was the first alternate for the Junior Grand Prix Final in his first international season in 2018, and replaced fellow Olympian Andrew Torgashev in the final, going on to win the event with a junior world record and becoming the youngest winner of the competition. Gogolev struggled for many seasons due to growth spurts and a myriad of injuries, finally achieving more consistent success again this year. He also enjoys mountain biking.

His quad lutz was regarded as one of the best techniques for the jump in the world, but he no longer jumps it in competition. Jin has struggled with injuries in recent seasons, resulting in missed time, disappointing results, and reduced technical content. Despite this, he won the spot for the Olympics with overwhelming confidence over his fellow countrymen. This will be his 3rd Olympic Games appearance.

His results in recent seasons have been extremely volatile; he can go from poor results to highly successful from one competition to the next.
